    Along the Trent.

    Along the Trent the fields lie deep with snow.
    The trees are garlanded with icicles
    and the village pond is frozen over.
    The village itself is dark and quiet
    but the pub is an oasis of song and laughter.
    Opening the doors to the church the priest smiles
    and prepares for midnight mass.
    Gradually the pub empties and the church fills
    and, as the bells toll midnight, the church rings
    to voices praising the glory of god on this day;
    christmas day
